Regular exercise contributes to good health and improves quality of life. Physical activity also positively affects people’s social lives, from social participation to general well-being. These positive effects of physical activity apply to everyone: young and old, healthy people and those with a chronic condition or physical or mental disabilities. What’s more, for people with disabilities physical activity is not simply a way to relax, but it can also contribute to safeguarding (or even improving) functionality and therefore autonomy.

However, for people with disabilities or chronic conditions, regular participation in physical activity is not always accessible and participation rates are up to three times less than for people without disabilities. They may for instance experience difficulty finding a suitable sports or physical activity programme in their immediate surroundings, mostly due to deficits in staff training.

Partner organisations also noticed lack of programs tailored to the needs and interests of young people with disabilities. This scarcity limits their opportunities for participation, as they may not find activities that align with their preferences and abilities. Even when programs are available, they may not adequately address the diverse needs of young individuals with disabilities, including those with varying types and degrees of disabilities.

These recognised needs will be addressed through capacity-building initiatives, ultimately striving to create an inclusive and empowering environment for young people with disabilities through sport, outdoor, and leisure activities.

Project objectives:

  • To raise capacity of youth work organisations and youth workers (in all our countries, and especially in BA and XK) on how to sensitise mainstream youth and youth workers for inclusion of Youngsters with Disabilities (YWDs) through quality youth sport work, outdoor and leisure programmes.

  • Capacity building of youth work organisations on quality adaptation of spaces and methods for youth sport work, outdoor and leisure activities with mixed groups of youngsters mainstream and with different abilities.

  • Capacity building of youth work coordinators with different abilities on active participation through quality management of spaces for youth sport work, outdoor and leisure activities with mixed groups of youngsters mainstream and with different abilities.
